Netas, voters connect online

By: Surender Sharma Date: 2009-04-13

Delhi:
With about five crore Net-savvy voters, the poll is being monitored on the web

With about five crore Net-savvy voters and equally enthusiastic netas, it seems the upcoming General Elections have shifted to the web.

Politicians are using blogs to reach out to voters, the electorate is tracking candidates and their speeches on poll-special websites and social networking sites and discussion forums are hotly debating the government in the offing. Never has Indian politics dominated the virtual world on such a large scale.

From veteran leaders like LK Advani, the Bharatiya Janata Party's prime ministerial candidate, to Vijender Gupta, a first-time BJP candidate from Chandni Chowk, every leader is expressing himself through blogs and websites.

"The Internet is playing a much bigger role in this election than it did in 2004. Leaders are blogging to appease their voters online. Also, a number of educative websites and discussion forums have come up to offer voters a clear choice," said Sanjeev Sinha of pravkta.com, who has launched the poll-special site for coverage of the General Elections.

All prominent media houses too have launched dedicated sites for coverage of the elections. Speeches, rallies, discussions on poll manifestos and threadbare details about candidates are available online so that users can be unbiased in their choice. Websites are also encouraging voters to vote and providing them information about the polling process.

"With around five crore netizens in India, it makes sense to campaign online. It is also cost effective," said BJP spokesperson Sidarth Nath Singh.

While the Internet has made the neta more accessible to the voter and the polling process more transparent, social networking sites like orkut are offering a wide forum to youngsters to freely debate about candidates and parties. "The Internet has emerged as the biggest election tool in modern times. No political party can ignore it any more," said Congress spokesperson Satyavrat Chaturvedi.

And the young urban voter couldn't have been happier. "It is not possible for us to attend rallies and listen to netas. Neither is it possible for every one to check a leader's credentials. The Internet does all this for us," said Geetika Chopra, who works with a private firm in Noida, and regularly checks poll sites.
